Short answer

As 2026 planning estimates in Canadian dollars, routine sewer service calls run from about $200 to $900 (cleaning, jetting, camera inspection, root cutting), a backwater valve about $1,800 to $4,500, a spot repair about $3,500 to $9,000, and full-length lining, bursting or open-cut replacement of a 15 m lateral about $9,000 to $24,500, rising sharply under driveways and at depth.

Key takeaways
  • Service visits are cheap relative to the decisions they inform; a camera run is the best-value spend before any major work.
  • Full-length jobs scale with metres of pipe, and restoration of hard surfaces can add as much as the pipe work.
  • After-hours calls commonly cost 1.4 to 1.6 times the daytime range.
  • Municipal-side work, permits and taxes are usually outside these ranges and must be asked about separately.
  • Subsidies can cut the net cost of a backwater valve substantially in some cities, with conditions.

01 /How much does each sewer service cost in 2026?

This table brings all ten Sewers.ca service lanes together. Where a figure comes from the sewer cost estimator, it uses the same assumptions so the numbers agree across the site.

02 /What makes a sewer job cost more?

Four factors account for most of the spread between a cheap and an expensive version of the same job: depth, what sits on top, access, and timing. The estimator models all four, and the numbers show how strongly they compound.

How conditions move a 15 m open-cut replacement (CAD, 2026)
ConditionsPlanning rangeChange from the baseline
Typical depth, lawn, cleanout (baseline)$11,500–$24,500—
Shallow, lawn$10,350–$22,050About 10% lower
Deep, lawn$14,950–$31,850About 30% higher

Access matters for every job: without a usable cleanout, the estimator adds $150 to $450 for pulling a toilet or working from the roof vent. Timing matters for service calls: an after-hours visit is modelled at 1.4 times the low end and 1.6 times the high end.

03 /What is usually not included in a sewer quote?

The biggest surprises in sewer pricing come from items that sit outside the contractor's scope, or that nobody could know until the ground was open. Ask about each one in writing.

  • Municipal-side work. Most cities checked for this hub own the pipe beyond the property line; Winnipeg, by contrast, says owners own the service all the way to the main, including under the street.
  • Permits and inspection fees, which each municipality sets.
  • Taxes. GST or HST, and provincial sales tax where it applies.
  • Hidden conditions, such as rock, groundwater, buried debris or a second defect found once the line is exposed.
  • Interior finishing around a basement dig, beyond patching the concrete.
  • Premium restoration, such as decorative concrete, irrigation systems or mature plantings.

04 /What do sewage backups cost when cleanup is involved?

Cleanup is priced by area and materials, not by pipe. As planning figures, a professional cleanup of an unfinished area with hard surfaces often runs $1,000 to $3,500, one finished room $3,000 to $10,000, and a whole finished basement $8,000 to $25,000, before rebuilding. Delays past 48 hours raise the risk of mould and its remediation cost.

Insurance changes the owner's share. The Insurance Bureau of Canada states that basement water damage from a sewer backup is covered only if you bought optional sewer backup coverage. Read your policy wording, including limits and deductibles, before you need it.

05 /Are there subsidies or rebates for sewer work in Canada?

Some cities subsidise protective plumbing, mostly backwater valves and sump pumps. Two examples verified in September 2026:

Examples of municipal subsidies (as checked September 2026; confirm current terms)
ProgramWhat it offersSelected conditions
City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection SubsidyUp to 80% of invoiced cost: backwater valve max $1,600 each (two max), sump pump max $2,250, battery backup max $300, foundation drain severance max $400; up to $6,650 per propertyWork on or after Nov 12, 2025; permit and inspection for valves; apply within two years
EPCOR Backwater Valve Subsidy (Edmonton)Up to $800Home built before 1989; flooding history; no existing valve; plumber-installed; first come, first served

Other municipalities have their own programs, and some have ended. Halifax Water will reimburse up to $700 including HST for plumbing and video costs if a certified plumber's inspection and written report show the blockage was on the utility's side. Check your own city's current pages before booking work.

06 /How do sewer costs differ for condos and commercial buildings?

The residential ranges above assume a single house with one lateral. Shared and commercial systems are usually priced by time, equipment and scope instead, and the extras differ.

Cost factors beyond the residential ranges
Building typeExtra cost factors
CondominiumCommon-element approvals, resident notice, access through units, reserve-fund timing
Townhouse complexShared laterals, several connections, landscaping restoration across units
Restaurant or food businessInterceptor servicing, jetting schedules, after-hours work
Multi-unit rentalTenant notice, water shut-down windows, larger pipe equipment

The commercial and multi-unit page explains the rules behind these extras, including Calgary's grease interceptor requirements.

07 /How can you keep sewer costs down without cutting corners?

  1. Film before you fix

A $250 to $600 camera run can steer you away from a five-figure replacement you do not need, or toward a lining job that avoids a driveway.

  2. Install a cleanout

It lowers the cost of every future visit and avoids pulling toilets.

  3. Schedule, do not panic

Where the line still flows, planned work avoids after-hours premiums and lets you compare quotes.

  4. Bundle visits

Adding a camera run to a cleaning visit is often cheaper than two separate calls.

  5. Check responsibility first

Your municipality may own the part of the line that failed.

FAQQuestions people ask

What does a full sewer lateral replacement run in Canada in 2026?

As a 2026 planning estimate, open-cut replacement of a 15 m residential lateral under lawn at typical depth runs about $11,500 to $24,500, and roughly $16,450 to $36,850 when deep and under concrete. Permits, municipal-side work and taxes are extra.

Is sewer lining cheaper than digging?

Not always in pipe cost, but often in total cost under driveways, slabs and landscaping, because lining avoids surface restoration. At 15 m, lining plans at about $9,000 to $23,500 regardless of what is on top.

How much is an emergency sewer call?

The estimator models after-hours service calls at 1.4 to 1.6 times the scheduled range. A cable cleaning that plans at $200 to $450 in business hours becomes roughly $280 to $720 after hours, before any no-cleanout surcharge.

Does the city pay for any part of my sewer line?

In many Canadian cities the municipality owns and maintains the portion from the main to the property line, and the owner the rest. Winnipeg is a notable exception. Ask your municipality before paying for work near the boundary.

Why are sewer quotes so different from each other?

Usually because they price different scopes: different methods, restoration standards, permit handling or assumptions about depth. Comparing quotes built on the same footage and scope removes most of the gap.
